Xiaomi’s REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G wins the spec race, but Samsung’s Galaxy A57 5G offers longer-term certainty

Xiaomi leads on screen, battery and charging hardware, while Samsung counters with a lighter design, clearer software support and IP68 protection.

The Samsung Galaxy A57 5G and Xiaomi REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G are pitched to different priorities, and neither looks like a universal winner on paper. Published specifications suggest Xiaomi has the edge on display size, panel resolution, battery capacity and charging speed, while Samsung counters with a lighter body, a clearer software-support promise and the reassurance of IP68 protection. In practical terms, the better choice will depend less on the model names than on local pricing, network compatibility, warranty terms and which regional version is actually being sold.

On the display front, the REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G appears stronger in the published material. Xiaomi’s product information points to a 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, whereas Samsung’s published specifications list a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED Plus panel at the same refresh rate. That means the Xiaomi handset offers more screen real estate and a sharper pixel density on paper, which should appeal to users who spend more time reading, streaming video or gaming. Samsung’s slightly smaller panel may still be easier to handle one-handed, particularly because its documented weight is lower.

Battery is another area where the REDMI model looks more aggressive. Xiaomi quotes an 8,340mAh typical battery and 67W charging, while Samsung’s published figures show a 5,000mAh battery and up to 45W wired charging. That gap is large enough to matter in day-to-day use, especially for people who rely on mobile data, navigation or long media sessions. Even so, capacity alone does not determine endurance: chipset efficiency, screen brightness, software tuning and network conditions all influence how long a phone lasts. The larger Xiaomi battery may also be partly offset by its bigger, higher-resolution display.

Samsung’s main advantage is clearer in portability and software policy. The Galaxy A57 5G is listed at 179g and 6.9mm thick in Samsung’s Hong Kong specification sheet, making it the slimmer and lighter of the two. More importantly, Samsung says the phone is eligible for up to six generations of Android and One UI upgrades, plus six years of security updates. Xiaomi’s published wording is different: it promises six years of security updates and separately refers to a 60-month “like-new software experience” based on an internal ageing test. Those claims are not the same thing, so buyers who plan to keep a phone for several years may find Samsung’s support language more straightforward.

Durability and connectivity need careful reading rather than assumptions. Samsung states an IP68 rating for the Galaxy A57 5G, while Xiaomi advertises a broader set of water- and dust-resistance claims for the REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G under laboratory conditions. Neither phone should be treated as waterproof in everyday use, and liquid damage may still fall outside warranty coverage. Camera comparisons are also incomplete. Samsung publishes a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilisation, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, a 5MP macro camera and a 12MP front camera, but Xiaomi’s global material does not provide an equivalent full specification for a direct like-for-like judgement.

That leaves value, which will vary by market. Samsung’s US launch price was announced at $549.99, while Samsung Hong Kong listed local prices of HKD 4,698 for the 12GB/256GB model and HKD 5,498 for the 12GB/512GB version. No like-for-like official retail price for the REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G was given in the available material, so buyers should compare the exact regional model, storage size, band support, charger inclusion and warranty coverage before deciding. For most readers, the REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G is the stronger specification play, while the Galaxy A57 5G is the safer choice if software support, lighter weight and a more established service network matter more.
