Google investigates Pixel Watch bug draining batteries in hours

Google says it is working on a fix after owners of several Pixel Watch generations reported sudden battery drain, even when their devices were idle.

Google has confirmed it is investigating a battery drain bug affecting several generations of Pixel Watch, after users reported that devices which previously lasted a day or two were suddenly running flat in less than 12 hours. In some cases, owners said charge levels were falling sharply even while the watch was idle and the Always-on Display was switched off, pointing to a software fault rather than ordinary usage patterns.

The reports span the Pixel Watch 2, Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Watch 5. Android Authority and other technology outlets said some users had seen battery life collapse from around 24 to 48 hours to just a few hours, with one recurring complaint being that the drain continued even when no workouts were running and no obvious background activity was taking place. That pattern has led observers to suspect a bug in a system service or another process running behind the scenes rather than a simple hardware defect.

Google has now acknowledged the problem and said it is working on a fix, although it has not given a timetable for release. According to Android Authority, the company said the issue affects only a small number of owners, but it did not identify the underlying cause. That leaves users with little immediate certainty beyond the expectation that an update is in development.

In the meantime, affected owners have been trying a range of workarounds. Reports gathered by Android Authority and TechAdvisor suggest that restarting the watch, checking for pending system and app updates, and reviewing battery usage by installed applications may help in some cases. Some users have also said a factory reset improved performance, particularly when the device was set up again from scratch rather than restored from a backup. For older models, normal battery ageing may still be a factor, but the scale and suddenness of the drain suggests that ageing alone does not explain the problem on its own.
