Xiaomi’s budget Redmi 17 5G delivers nearly 26 hours of Wi-Fi browsing

The Redmi 17 5G prioritises stamina over performance, with its 7,500mAh battery helping it outlast several similarly priced rivals by a wide margin.

Xiaomi has added another low-cost handset to its growing list of long-lasting phones, with the Redmi 17 5G posting battery results that place it well ahead of many rivals in the same price band. Notebookcheck’s review describes the device as an entry-level model built around Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 4 Gen 5, with a 6.9-inch IPS screen, 5G support and a 7,500mAh silicon-carbon battery that now appears to be the defining feature of the phone.

In testing, the Redmi 17 5G lasted 25 hours and 44 minutes in continuous Wi-Fi browsing, a result Notebookcheck says leaves Samsung’s Galaxy A17 5G on less than half that endurance. The review also notes that the phone’s modest power draw and relatively restrained display brightness help stretch the battery further, even if the handset is not especially strong on performance or camera quality.

That endurance comes with trade-offs. The Redmi 17 5G is only sold with 4GB or 6GB of RAM, and its display is limited to 1,600 x 720 resolution despite supporting a 120Hz refresh rate. Storage options run to 128GB or 256GB, with microSD expansion available, but the broader specification sheet makes clear that Xiaomi has focused first on stamina rather than speed or imaging.

Charging is comparatively quick for such a large battery, although not immediate. Notebookcheck found that the phone accepts up to 45W charging and can refill fully in up to two hours and 30 minutes, while Xiaomi’s own regional product pages and support material say the handset can reach a full charge in about 96 to 100 minutes under ideal conditions with the right charger. The company also says the phone supports wired reverse charging at up to 22.5W, allowing it to top up accessories such as wireless earbuds.

The broader significance is that Xiaomi is now using battery life as a sharp competitive edge even in the budget segment. Notebookcheck says the Redmi 17 5G is part of a pattern in which Xiaomi’s inexpensive phones are increasingly outlasting similarly priced models from Motorola, Nothing and Samsung, and the company’s own figures suggest the handset is designed for roughly two days of use in normal conditions. For buyers who care most about longevity, that makes it one of the more distinctive low-cost Android phones currently available.
