Google’s Home update tackles voice glitches and fixes across Nest devices

The broad rollout improves voice commands, Matter controls and streaming, while addressing connectivity and audio problems across Google’s smart-home hardware.

Google’s latest Home and Gemini update is broader than a routine assistant patch. According to Google’s release notes, the rollout brings a long list of fixes across voice control, the Home app and several pieces of Nest and Google Home hardware, suggesting the company is trying to tighten the whole smart-home stack rather than simply refine its AI assistant. The most visible changes are aimed at making common voice commands behave more reliably, while also improving streaming stability and audio output on Google’s speakers.

Among the Gemini for Home changes, Google says it has improved recognition for requests to move music from one room to another, which should reduce the stream of mistaken “Sorry, I didn’t understand” replies that some users have seen. The company is also addressing voice-control issues on smart displays running YouTube TV, where command detection is meant to be more dependable. Another fix targets alarms and timers that could unexpectedly drop to zero volume, with Google now aligning those alerts with the device volume instead.

Volume handling more generally is also being adjusted. In one previously reported bug, asking Gemini to change the volume on a speaker in another room could affect the device currently being spoken to if the intended target could not be found. Google says that behaviour has now been corrected. These changes matter because they address the kind of everyday failures that make a voice assistant feel unreliable even when the underlying hardware is working normally.

The Home app is getting a set of more practical controls as well. Google’s support notes say Android will now recognise more specific Matter closure types, including garage doors, gates, windows and cabinets, and show the correct icons and controls for each. Compatible Matter smart plugs and energy monitors will also surface real-time power use and cumulative energy consumption directly on device tiles and control screens. Google is adding a shortcut in the thermostat controller and Home View for switching quickly to an energy-saving temperature before leaving home, while foldable-phone users should see better camera live-view behaviour when opening or closing the handset.

Google’s hardware updates are just as wide-ranging. The Chromecast with Google TV HD and 4K are receiving the August 2026 security patch, alongside connectivity, streaming and display fixes, according to the company’s firmware information. Nest Wifi hardware is getting improvements to mesh resilience, DNS fallback and overall stability. Google Home and Nest speakers are being tuned for smoother playback, with less boomy bass and clearer sound at lower volumes, while also fixing disappearing speaker groups, Wi-Fi 7 connection failures and Bluetooth playback that could pause after a resume command.

Older Nest cameras that have been moved into Google Home are also included in the release. Google says it has improved Wi-Fi reconnection, sped up night-vision activation on first-generation Nest Cams and fixed audio sync problems, as well as unexpected restarts on the first-generation Nest Hello. The Nest doorbell is also gaining better person detection and Familiar Face recognition, while Nest Cam IQ models receive a fix for their status light. Taken together, the update shows Google is still doing substantial maintenance work across its smart-home ecosystem, not just on Gemini but on the connected devices that sit behind it.
