Cold weather need not stop winter rides, but it can reduce battery performance and lifespan. Keep the battery warm and dry, and let it reach room temperature before charging.
Cold weather does not rule out e-bike use, but it does place extra demands on the battery. According to Dekra, low temperatures can noticeably reduce both performance and service life if the battery is not handled properly. The organisation says winter riding is still entirely feasible, because the battery warms itself during use and can therefore remain within its operating range once the bike is moving.
The key issue is what happens before and after the ride. ADAC and Bosch both say a battery should ideally be stored indoors, at room temperature, rather than left overnight in a cold garage, shed or on an unheated balcony. Where possible, the battery should be removed from the bike and brought into a dry, frost-free place. Bosch also advises keeping the charge at a moderate level during longer periods of storage, rather than leaving the battery either full or empty for extended stretches.
Charging is another point where temperature matters. Dekra’s bicycle specialist Jochen Hof says batteries should only be charged once they have reached room temperature, and that charging in temperatures below freezing should be avoided altogether. ADAC says a battery that has just come in from the cold should be allowed to warm up gradually before it is connected to the charger, because very low temperatures can limit charging and increase the risk of damage through condensation.
For riders who have to keep an e-bike outdoors, there are still some practical ways to reduce the impact of winter. Accessories such as thermal protective covers can help slow heat loss and preserve range, while a full bicycle cover offers broader protection against rain and snow. ADAC also recommends fitting the battery shortly before setting off, so that it benefits from the warmth generated during the ride. On bikes with a fixed battery, Bosch and ADAC both say it is worth choosing models carefully, because a removable battery is much easier to store correctly in winter.
Dekra says the ideal storage temperature for an e-bike is roughly 10 to 20 degrees Celsius, which underlines how sensitive the technology remains to cold. The advice from all three sources is consistent: keep the battery warm, dry and out of the frost whenever possible, charge it only at the right temperature, and treat winter storage as part of routine maintenance rather than an afterthought.
