Extra heat, sluggish performance and faster battery drain can be temporary as phones re-index and optimise after an update. Here’s what to check if the problems persist.
A phone that feels slower, runs warmer or loses charge more quickly just after a software update may still be completing background work, rather than suffering a lasting fault. Search indexing and software optimisation can continue after installation, temporarily using power and system resources.
Apple says Spotlight rebuilds a searchable index of information such as messages, photos, files and apps after an update. Depending on how much data is stored, this can take hours or days. Apple advises that indexing finishes sooner when the device is idle, connected to power and, where needed, online over Wi-Fi. Google similarly notes that Pixel phones may use extra battery power while they download and optimise new software; it says unusually rapid drain should be investigated if it persists beyond a few days.
These temporary tasks can coincide with sluggish animations and increased heat, but persistent problems may have other causes. Older devices may have less capacity to handle newer software, while low free storage, incompatible apps, temperature extremes or an ageing battery can also affect performance. Apple explains that a chemically aged battery may be less able to supply peak power, and that iOS can manage processor performance to reduce the risk of unexpected shutdowns.
Start with the low-risk steps: leave the phone connected to power and Wi-Fi while it is idle, then restart it if it remains slow. Check for app updates and review available storage. Google warns that Android phones can begin to have problems when less than 10 per cent of storage is free. If an Android device is still sluggish, Google recommends testing whether a downloaded app is responsible, including by using safe mode.
Battery settings can help distinguish short-lived post-update drain from a continuing issue. Pixel users can review battery diagnostics and app usage; iPhone users can check battery condition and performance information in Settings. Heat or cold can also affect a phone’s operation, so let the device return to a moderate temperature before assessing its performance.
A factory reset is a more drastic option, not a routine first response: Google warns that it deletes data and advises backing up the phone beforehand. If slowdown or battery drain continues after several days and basic checks, contact the manufacturer or an authorised service provider. A persistent problem may point to an app, battery or hardware limitation rather than unfinished update activity.
