Windows update feature may cause lag for home users due to hidden upload activity

A Windows feature designed to speed up updates can, in practice, become a hidden source of lag for home users. Delivery Optimization lets PCs fetch update and Microsoft Store files from more than one source, including other computers on a local network or across the internet, according to Microsoft support and engineering documentation.

The service is meant to ease pressure on Microsoft’s servers and reduce the time needed to deliver updates, including driver files and Defender definitions. But as How-To Geek noted, that convenience can come at a cost when a machine is also uploading pieces of update data at the same time it is trying to game, stream or handle a video call.

The problem is often most noticeable on typical home broadband connections, which usually offer much slower upload speeds than download speeds. If Delivery Optimization is using a large share of that upstream capacity, ordinary browsing may still seem fine while latency-sensitive tasks suffer from spikes, jitter or dropped calls. Microsoft says the feature can be managed through Windows Update settings, but users have also reported that the controls are not always intuitive.

How-To Geek suggested checking Windows’ Delivery Optimization activity monitor, which logs how much data has been uploaded to “PCs on the Internet”. If the figures are high, the feature may be to blame. The article also said users who want to turn it off entirely can do so through system settings or more manually through the Registry, though Microsoft’s own guidance emphasises configuration rather than outright removal.

For frustrated users, the practical lesson is simple: before replacing a router or blaming the internet provider, it may be worth checking whether Windows itself is quietly using the connection in the background.
