Apple launches iOS 27 this autumn, introducing a significantly upgraded Siri AI supported by Google’s Gemini and a suite of on-device AI enhancements alongside practical improvements for a wide range of iPhone models.
Apple has set iOS 27 on a familiar autumn path, with the company saying the next major iPhone software update will arrive this fall after first appearing in developer testing and then in public beta. According to Apple’s June announcement and subsequent reports from MacRumors and PhoneArena, the update was unveiled at WWDC 2026, moved into developer beta in early June and reached public beta in July, with a full release expected in September alongside the next iPhone launch cycle. Apple’s own newsroom note said the update is designed to work across a broad range of devices, while industry coverage says the most advanced features will remain limited to newer hardware.
The headline change is Siri, which Apple is recasting as Siri AI, a far more capable assistant built around Apple Intelligence and, according to the company’s announcement, supported by Google’s Gemini model. Apple says the assistant will be able to handle text entry, search messages, files and phone data, draft emails and messages, answer questions about notes, carry out in-app actions and recognise objects in photos. The system is also expected to offer more personalised voice settings, including tone, pace and accent, while keeping conversations synced across devices linked to the same Apple ID.
Beyond Siri, Apple is planning a wider push into on-device AI tools. The company says Apple Intelligence will gain smarter photo handling, AI image creation, message and email editing, automatic tab grouping in Safari, website monitoring through a new notify-me function, faster password changes and a redesigned task planner. MacRumors also reported that Apple is preparing improvements to Maps, including a more detailed Flyover experience, as well as better Find My sharing.
iOS 27 is also set to bring more practical changes. Apple is expanding parental controls with new limits on system apps, website access approval and schedules for whole categories of services. The company is also refining the Liquid Glass interface with higher contrast, sharper icons and a transparency slider. Performance is another focus: according to the reports, apps should launch faster, photo uploads will be quicker and AirDrop transfers are expected to improve, alongside faster Wi-Fi and cellular connections. Compatibility remains broad, with support expected to extend to iPhone 11 and newer models, while Apple says some of the most advanced intelligence features will require newer devices such as iPhone 15 Pro and later.
