India’s telecom regulator imposes ₹1.9 crore in penalties for service quality failures in 2026

India’s telecom regulator, TRAI, fined major operators a total of ₹1.9 crore for missing service quality standards in fiscal 2026, amid tighter scrutiny and regulatory reforms aimed at enhancing consumer protections.

India’s telecom regulator has imposed penalties totalling ₹1.9 crore on operators in fiscal 2026 for failing to meet service quality standards, Parliament was told on Thursday. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, minister of state for communications, said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India seeks an explanation whenever benchmark quality-of-service targets are missed and then decides whether to levy a financial disincentive.

According to the figures shared by the minister, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd faced the largest penalty at ₹57.5 lakh, followed by Bharti Airtel at ₹48 lakh. Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd was fined ₹37 lakh, Vodafone Idea ₹31 lakh and Reliance Jio ₹17 lakh. The amounts reflect TRAI’s enforcement powers under its quality-of-service framework, which is designed to hold operators accountable when call handling, network performance or related benchmarks slip.

The latest penalties come against a wider backdrop of tighter scrutiny of telecom compliance in India. In March 2026, TRAI also strengthened rules on tariff reporting and financial disclosures, introducing graded penalties, higher ceilings and interest on delayed payments. The move followed longstanding criticism from operators that regulatory requirements can be difficult to meet in the face of problems such as right-of-way disputes, fibre cuts and equipment theft. Consumer groups, meanwhile, have continued to push for stronger service standards and quicker complaint resolution, underscoring the pressure on carriers to improve day-to-day service quality.
