Oppo may be transitioning from Sony sensors to Samsung’s 200MP camera sensors in its upcoming devices, signalling a major shift in high-resolution smartphone imaging amid industry-wide evolving standards.
OPPO may be preparing one of its biggest camera-supplier shifts yet, with a new leak suggesting the company is moving away from Sony sensors across much of its smartphone line-up and leaning more heavily on Samsung’s 200-megapixel parts. The reported change would affect everything from mid-range handsets to top-end models, if it proves accurate. According to Android Headlines, the motivation is not just cost-cutting during a period of tight component supply, but also OPPO’s push to standardise ultra-high-resolution imaging hardware across more device tiers.
The leak, attributed to the X account Tech Home, says OPPO is lining up Samsung replacements for several Sony LYT sensors of different sizes. In the mid-range, the 1/1.56-inch Sony LYT-700 would reportedly give way to Samsung’s ISOCELL HP5. In the next tier up, the 1/1.4-inch Sony LYT-808 is said to be on track to be replaced by Samsung’s HPE, while the 1/1.28-inch Sony LYT-828 would make way for Samsung’s HPC. Even Sony’s larger 1/1.12-inch LYT-901 is said to be in line for replacement, though the leak does not name the alternative. Android Headlines said industry watchers believe Samsung’s unannounced HPA sensor could be the answer.
The potential switch also reflects a broader industry trend towards 200-megapixel cameras in premium phones. Gizmochina has compared Sony and Samsung’s 200-megapixel mobile sensors and found that the trade-offs often come down to sensor size, pixel binning, zoom performance, HDR handling and video capabilities. Samsung has already used its own 200-megapixel technology in flagship devices, including the ISOCELL HP2 with 8K video support, while OPPO has been linked in other reports to 200-megapixel hardware in upcoming Find X-series models. SamMobile has separately reported that OPPO’s Find X9 family could move to a Samsung 200-megapixel sensor for improved zoom and image quality.
Still, the picture is not entirely settled. OPPO has not confirmed any of these changes, and the company is reportedly still exploring other suppliers alongside Samsung as it looks for more affordable options. That leaves the current picture as a strong rumour rather than a finished product plan. But if the leaks are accurate, OPPO could soon become one of the clearest examples of a smartphone maker reshaping its camera strategy around high-resolution Samsung sensors rather than Sony’s long-established image pipeline.
