Samsung’s new foldable lineup sees a significant surge in pre-orders, with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra setting a company record amid expanding global availability and increased competition from rivals like Apple and Google.
Samsung is taking its latest foldables into 106 markets from Thursday, and early demand is already giving the company reason for optimism. According to Samsung and reports cited by Tom’s Guide, pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8 have risen more than 30% from last year, setting a new company record at 1.44 million units. That follows a strong showing in South Korea, where the new lineup also posted a domestic pre-sale record.
The early response appears to favour the larger model. Tom’s Guide reported that nearly half of all pre-orders were for the wider Galaxy Z Fold 8, while graphite emerged as the most popular colour choice. Samsung also said the foldables are being sold through mobile carriers, retailers, Samsung.com and its own stores, as the company looks to turn launch-day interest into sustained sales.
The new range broadens Samsung’s foldable strategy from two models to three, with the Fold 8 Ultra joining the standard Fold 8 and Flip 8. Samsung says the expanded line-up is meant to widen appeal, with the Ultra pitched at power users, the Fold at customers wanting a larger tablet-like screen and the Flip at buyers looking for a more compact device. Reviews have pointed to thinner designs, upgraded hinges and improved displays, while Samsung has also pushed new AI features across the range.
The launch comes with competitive pressure building. Tom’s Guide noted that Samsung is offering sizeable trade-in deals, which could help blunt the impact of any future rival from Apple, long rumoured to be working on its first foldable iPhone. Google is also expected to unveil a new foldable soon, adding to a crowded field as Samsung tries to defend its lead in a category it helped define.
