Glyph’s Atom EX80 is more than just another external SSD. In PetaPixel’s review, it emerges as a drive built for photographers and filmmakers who need speed, but also for anyone who has ever wished a portable storage device did a little more to protect itself and the work on it. The review describes it as a rare combination of very fast 80Gbps transfer performance, magnetic mounting and built-in location tracking that works with both Apple Find My and Android apps. It is a strong example of how premium storage is starting to compete on usefulness as much as raw throughput.
That broader pitch is echoed on Glyph’s product page, which says the Atom EX80 can reach real-world speeds of up to 7,000MB/s and is offered in capacities up to 8TB. The company also positions it as part of a workflow package rather than a standalone accessory, pairing the drive with matching USB4 80Gbps cables and pointing to its solid aluminium core as a way to improve thermal management. A previous PetaPixel report on the launch also said the drive was aimed squarely at high-resolution video and large RAW photo files.
In testing, PetaPixel said the EX80 delivered unusually steady results. Blackmagic Disk Speed Test showed write speeds of 6,041.2MB/s when the drive was fresh, 5,799.6MB/s when full and 5,947.1MB/s after being emptied again, while read speeds stayed close to that range throughout. Crystal Disk Mark pointed to similarly solid sustained performance, and the review says the drive avoided the cache-related slowdowns seen in some competing 80Gbps models. The drive also stayed only warm rather than uncomfortably hot, with no obvious thermal throttling during the tests.
The extras may be what make the EX80 stand out most. The review praises the magnetic mounting system, which can attach to MagSafe-compatible surfaces and other metal objects, and the tracker built into the top of the casing, which can be paired, sounded and monitored through a smartphone app. That may sound like a luxury for a desktop accessory, but PetaPixel argues it has real value for travelling creatives and for studios that ship drives to clients. The main drawback, according to the review, is the lack of water resistance. Even so, the overall verdict is that Glyph has made one of the fastest portable SSDs around feel practical as well as technically impressive.
