New wifi optimisation tips reveal how to improve home connectivity beyond router upgrades

Expert advice suggests that strategic router placement, band management, and firmware updates can significantly enhance home internet performance, often reducing reliance on costly hardware overhauls.

Slow-loading video, lag in online games and sluggish file downloads do not always point to a fault with the broadband provider. As consumer technology guides from AVG, Consumer Reports and other Wi-Fi specialists note, the problem often lies with where the router sits, how it is configured or whether the hardware is simply too old for modern demands. A wired speed test is a useful first check, because it can show whether the bottleneck is the internet line itself or only the wireless network.

Placement remains the most important free fix. The best position is usually central, open and elevated, rather than inside a cabinet, in a corner or behind a television. Thick walls, large furniture and metal surfaces can weaken the signal, while microwaves, cordless phones and baby monitors may add interference. Guidance from AVG and Consumer Reports also suggests that external antennas do not need to point straight up; angling them differently can help spread coverage more evenly between rooms and floors.

Many routers already support more than one band, and the choice matters. The 5 GHz band generally offers higher throughput and less interference, which makes it better suited to streaming, video calls, online gaming and large downloads. But its range is shorter and it struggles more with walls. The older 2.4 GHz band travels farther and is often more reliable in distant rooms or around obstacles, even if it is slower. Some routers manage band steering automatically, while others let users split the network into separate names and choose manually which band each device should use.

Another useful tool is smart queue management, or SQM, a form of traffic handling designed to reduce bufferbloat. That is the delay that happens when a router queues too much data and starts responding slowly, even if headline speed looks strong. This is most noticeable when several devices are streaming, uploading to the cloud or downloading large files at the same time. In some routers, the feature appears under quality of service, or QoS, traffic control or bufferbloat protection. Used correctly, it can prevent one heavy download from disrupting calls, games and other interactive traffic, although poorly set limits can reduce top speeds.

A restart can also solve short-term problems. Unplugging the router for around 30 seconds clears temporary faults, resets stuck processes and frees memory. After power is restored, the device may need a minute or two to reconnect all phones, televisions and computers. Firmware updates are equally important. Manufacturers use them to fix bugs, close security holes and improve stability, and in some cases they add wireless or traffic-management features. If none of that helps, a factory reset may be the last software step, but it removes saved settings, including the network name, password and security options, so the device must be set up again from scratch.

If the router is old, however, software changes may not be enough. A device that supports an outdated Wi-Fi standard or no longer receives updates may struggle to keep up with a busy home. Newer routers can handle more connected devices, reduce latency and make better use of fast broadband. Still, replacing the hardware is not a cure-all. If a wired test also falls short of the contracted speed, the fault is more likely to be with the line, modem or service itself than with Wi-Fi.
