Sony’s FE 100-400mm f/5.6-8 OSS is aimed at photographers who want serious telephoto reach without the bulk and price tag of a pro-grade super-telephoto zoom. According to Campkins Cameras and Digital Camera World, the full-frame E-mount lens weighs 654g and measures 78.2 x 164.5mm, making it far easier to carry for travel, wildlife and sports work than larger alternatives. Its variable aperture, from f/5.6 to f/8, reflects the emphasis on portability rather than outright brightness.
Sony has paired the zoom range with optical and autofocus features intended to keep the lens practical in the field. The design includes 15 elements in 10 groups, with ED and aspherical glass to help control distortion and preserve sharpness, while dual linear motors handle autofocus. Optical SteadyShot is built in for handheld shooting, and the lens also offers dust and moisture resistance, a 9-blade diaphragm, a 0.41x maximum magnification and close focusing down to 0.86m at the telephoto end, according to the product information and Digital Camera World.
