Lenovo’s new ThinkPad charger exemplifies subtle innovations for professional productivity

Lenovo’s latest ThinkPad X9-15p Gen 1 Aura Edition introduces a compact 100W GaN charger with a second USB-C port, highlighting a shift towards more streamlined, versatile power accessories for mobile professionals.

Lenovo’s latest ThinkPad charger shows how even a modest accessory can be refined for professional users. The new ThinkPad X9-15p Gen 1 Aura Edition ships with a compact 100W GaN adapter that plugs directly into the wall and includes a second USB-C port for charging another device at the same time. In practice, that means a phone, wireless earbuds or other low-power accessory can be topped up without carrying an extra charger.

The change is part of a broader evolution in laptop power design. For years, ThinkPad systems relied on larger, more conventional bricks connected by separate cables. More recently, wall-mounted GaN chargers have become common because gallium nitride components can deliver high power in a smaller form factor. Lenovo had already moved in that direction with the 65W charger bundled with the 2025 ThinkPad X9-15, but the newer X9-15p pushes the idea further with higher output and added flexibility.

That matters because the X9-15p is positioned as a more capable machine. According to TechRadar’s coverage of Lenovo’s CES 2026 launch, the laptop includes a 15.3-inch OLED display, up to 64GB of LPDDR5x memory, a 2TB PCIe Gen 5 SSD, Wi-Fi 7, Thunderbolt 4, USB-A and HDMI 2.1, all in a 1.5kg chassis. Lenovo’s own specifications list a 2880 x 1800 display, Dolby Atmos speakers and security features such as face authentication, a fingerprint reader built into the power button and TPM support.

The charger itself is not a headline feature in the usual sense, but it reflects a practical shift in how premium notebooks are packaged. Notebookcheck said the second USB-C port can deliver up to 15W, which is enough for accessories and many smartphones, although not a replacement for a full charger. For travelling professionals, that can reduce cable clutter and the number of separate power supplies in a bag, which is a small but meaningful improvement.
