Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 looks less like an incremental update than a correction. In several early reviews, the device is described as finally moving away from the tall, narrow foldable format that many users never fully embraced. According to TechRadar, Digital Camera World, Tom’s Guide, SamMobile and Smartprix, the new 5.5-inch cover display and 7.6-inch inner panel give the phone a shape closer to a compact passport when shut and a small tablet when opened. That wider layout appears to be the core of the appeal.
The change matters because it improves the basics that define a foldable’s day-to-day use. Reviewers say the outer screen is now far more usable for messages, browsing and media, while the inner 4:3-style display is better suited to reading, multitasking and video. Digital Camera World noted the reduced crease visibility and bright 3,000-nit panels, while SamMobile said the revised footprint makes the device feel meaningfully different from earlier Fold models. The result is a handset that seems designed around how people actually hold and open it, rather than around novelty alone.
Performance also appears to be a major strength. TechRadar and Tom’s Guide both point to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy as the engine behind flagship-level speed, while Digital Camera World says the phone can ship with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. Tom’s Guide reported that the Fold8 can handle three apps at once without obvious lag, and TechRadar highlighted One UI 9 on Android 17 as the layer that ties together multitasking features such as Now Nudge and My FanCam. Samsung’s software, in other words, seems tuned to make the wider display feel useful rather than merely large.
Battery life and charging also look competitive. Reviewers cite a 4,800mAh battery with 45W wired charging, and TechRadar says wireless charging reaches 20W. That is not revolutionary, but it supports the idea of a device built for long sessions of browsing, streaming and split-screen work. Several reviews also note the improved hinge design and lighter, more compact body, which should help the Fold8 feel less like a fragile experiment and more like a daily carry.
The clearest compromise is the camera system. The Fold8 reportedly uses dual 50-megapixel rear cameras, but no dedicated telephoto lens, leaving zoom to digital processing. TechRadar, Digital Camera World and Tom’s Guide all flag that omission as the main drawback, especially at a premium starting price of $1,899. For buyers who prioritise photography, that is a significant trade-off. For everyone else, the Fold8 may be the first Samsung foldable that makes the format feel not just practical but complete.
