OpenAI is close to launching a premium, screenless smart speaker resembling a puck, featuring lifelike movements and personalised AI interactions, signalling a significant push into consumer hardware set for 2027.
OpenAI is edging closer to a consumer hardware launch that could turn ChatGPT into a physical product in the home, with new reporting suggesting the company’s first device will be a screenless smart speaker shaped more like a compact puck than a conventional speaker. According to Bloomberg reporting cited by t3n, the device is being designed as a ring-like unit with a central opening, roughly the size of a hockey puck, and it may be portable enough to carry around the home thanks to an internal battery.
The price could be one of its biggest talking points. The latest reports suggest OpenAI is aiming for a launch price above $300 when the device arrives in 2027, which would place it well above many rival assistants. That would position it far closer to a premium gadget than a basic voice speaker. By comparison, t3n noted that Google’s Home Speaker with Gemini is priced at about €120, while Amazon’s Echo Dot with early access to Alexa Plus costs about €65.
The higher price appears to reflect a more ambitious hardware design. Reported plans include motors and moving parts that would let the speaker react physically to users, giving it a more lifelike presence. MacRumors said the device is being developed as an AI companion capable of answering questions, controlling smart-home products and playing media, with a camera also expected to help it understand its surroundings. That report said OpenAI wants the product to become more personalised over time, learning from users and responding more proactively.
The project also appears to be part of a broader hardware push around OpenAI and former Apple designer Jony Ive. Tom’s Hardware reported that OpenAI has recruited former Apple staff and is working with major suppliers including Luxshare and Goertek, while other reporting has pointed to additional concepts such as smart glasses and a smart lamp. For now, though, the smart speaker seems to be the clearest sign of how OpenAI plans to move ChatGPT beyond software and into everyday objects.
