Vivo revives its S series with the S2, a new upper mid-range phone in India

Vivo has announced the return of its S series with the S2, featuring a large curved AMOLED display, a substantial battery, and the latest Android 16 software, set to go on sale in India on August 11.

Vivo is bringing back its S series after a long hiatus with the S2, a mid-range handset built around a large curved display, a sizeable battery and a fresh Android 16 software stack. The company says the phone will go on sale in India on August 11, marking the return of a line that has been absent for about seven years.

At the centre of the device is MediaTek’s Dimensity 7360 Turbo chip, paired with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. That specification helps settle weeks of conflicting online speculation. Gizmochina and 91mobiles both pointed to the Dimensity 7360 family in early leaks, while Gadgets Now noted that some rumours had falsely pushed the phone into flagship territory with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. The pricing and hardware now place the S2 firmly in the upper mid-range segment.

The phone’s display is one of its main selling points. Vivo says it uses a 6.83-inch curved AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and peak brightness of 3,000 nits. Imaging hardware includes a 32-megapixel front camera, a 50-megapixel main rear sensor and a 2-megapixel depth unit, with the company’s Aura Light flash also included. Earlier leaks from Gizmochina suggested a 50-megapixel main camera with optical image stabilisation, although the final announcement does not highlight that detail.

Battery life should also be a major draw. Vivo lists a 7,050mAh battery with 44W charging, along with IP66 and IP69 dust and water resistance, MIL-STD-810H durability certification, stereo speakers and a 3,800 sq mm vapour chamber for cooling. The phone runs OriginOS 6 based on Android 16 and is promised three OS upgrades plus five years of security updates. In India, the 8GB/128GB version will cost INR39,999 and the 8GB/256GB model INR44,999.
