Microsoft adopts a cautious approach to removing legacy Windows 11 features, focusing on user journey and compatibility to ensure seamless updates without disrupting long-standing workflows.
Microsoft is approaching the removal of older Windows 11 features cautiously because compatibility still matters more than speed. Marcus Ash, Microsoft’s vice-president of design and research for Windows, told the Windows Central Podcast that the company studies how people actually move through tasks before deciding what to modernise first. The aim is to update interfaces without breaking the tools, drivers and workflows that businesses and long-time users still depend on.
That explains why the Control Panel has survived alongside the newer Settings app. According to Ash, Microsoft does not want to remove a legacy component until its functions have been fully absorbed elsewhere. He said the company has to avoid breaking its compatibility promise, especially where older software or hardware still depends on behaviour exposed through those interfaces. Microsoft is also building newer frameworks, including WinUI 3, to make those transitions easier without disrupting existing systems.
The company’s method is broader than simply redesigning old dialogue boxes. Ash said Microsoft looks at complete user journeys, such as the full sequence of actions in File Explorer, rather than treating each window in isolation. That approach helps explain why some areas move slowly while others are already changing. Microsoft has been modernising Settings, and it has also been updating older system dialogues that still look like they belong to much earlier versions of Windows.
The wider roadmap shows that Microsoft is willing to retire legacy features when there is a clear replacement. Its support documents say the old inbox Troubleshooters and the Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool are being phased out in favour of the Get Help troubleshooting platform over a three-year period. Microsoft’s Windows client documentation also lists features that have been removed entirely, including Windows PowerShell 2.0 in newer releases. Together, those changes suggest a gradual strategy: preserve compatibility where necessary, but remove old components once the modern alternative is ready.
