Samsung unveils two new premium foldables, the Galaxy Z Fold8 and the Ultra, offering tailored experiences for different users through size, camera capabilities, and price, marking a significant step in flexible smartphone technology.
Samsung’s two latest book-style foldables are aimed at different users, even though they share much of the same core hardware. According to Samsung Mobile Press, both the Galaxy Z Fold8 and the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, ship with One UI 9 based on Android 17 and promise seven years of system and security updates. The main split is in size and intent: Samsung positions the Fold8 as its first wide-format foldable, while the Ultra is the larger, more expensive model built around a bigger internal display and a more ambitious camera system.
On design, the difference is immediately visible. Samsung says both phones use an Armour Aluminium frame, glass backs and IP48 protection, but the Fold8 is the lighter device at 201g and has a 7.6-inch inner screen plus a 5.5-inch cover display. The Ultra is slimmer when folded but heavier at 215g, and its larger 8-inch inner panel is paired with a 6.5-inch outer display. TechRadar notes that Samsung is pitching the Fold8’s wider shape as better for reading and video, while the Ultra’s more square internal layout is intended to suit multitasking and productivity.
The hardware gap is clearest in photography and battery life. Samsung lists a dual rear camera set on the Fold8, led by a 50-megapixel main sensor and a 50-megapixel ultrawide lens, while the Ultra adds a 200-megapixel main camera and a 10-megapixel telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. Both models support 8K video at 30 frames per second. The Ultra also carries a larger 5,000mAh battery, compared with 4,800mAh in the Fold8, though charging is the same on both: 45W wired, 20W wireless and 4.5W reverse wireless. Industry summaries from Oled-info and 91mobiles also describe the Ultra as the more feature-rich option, with more RAM and storage headroom, up to 16GB and 1TB.
Price is where the decision becomes more practical. Samsung lists the Fold8 from $1,899.99 and the Ultra from $2,099.99, making the larger model the pricier purchase by a modest but meaningful margin. For buyers who want the best camera package, the bigger screen and slightly stronger battery, the Ultra is the obvious pick. But the Fold8 may be the smarter buy for people who value a wider front display, lower weight and a more conventional foldable experience. In short, Samsung now has two clearly differentiated premium foldables, and the better choice depends less on raw specifications than on how the device will actually be used.
