Ring launches its first indoor-only security camera, offering affordable 1080p HD monitoring with innovative privacy features, but with trade-offs in subscription dependence and advanced functions.
Amazon is offering the Ring Indoor Cam as a low-cost entry point into home monitoring, with the device positioned for buyers who want basic coverage without installing a full security system. The camera records in 1080p HD, supports Live View and colour night vision, and uses motion alerts to flag activity in real time. According to Ring’s own launch materials, it was introduced as the company’s first indoor-only camera and originally carried a $59.99 price tag.
Independent reviews suggest the appeal is not only price. Security.org says the current-generation model adds colour night vision, optional person detection and integration with Alexa and Google Assistant, while TechRadar and Digital Camera World both highlight its compact size and flexible placement. The camera can sit on a tabletop or be mounted on a wall, which makes it easier to place in a hallway, office or living room without much setup.
Ring also includes privacy-focused controls that may matter to buyers uneasy about an always-on device. The company says users can switch off the camera and microphone through the app, with an indicator light showing when recording is active. Tech Advisor notes that the app can also record video without audio, which may help when the camera is placed near private conversations.
There are, however, trade-offs. Reviews from TechRadar and Digital Camera World say the camera needs mains power and that access to recorded video depends on a Ring Protect subscription. Security.org says the service can extend storage and unlock features such as event review, while Tech Advisor and Tom’s Guide note that some advanced functions, including richer storage and detection tools, sit behind the paid plan. For shoppers comparing indoor cameras, that subscription cost is as important as the hardware price.
