Google has started rolling out Thread 1.4 support to Nest Hub and Nest Wifi Pro devices, extending a smart home update that is designed to make Matter-based networks easier to manage, more stable and less dependent on manual setup, according to Android Authority. The change strengthens the role of Google’s Nest hardware as part of the communications layer that sits behind connected-home devices, rather than as a visible feature for end users.
Thread is a low-power networking standard used by smart home products, while Matter is the interoperability layer meant to let devices from different brands work together more smoothly. Google’s support documentation says several Nest and Google Home products can already act as Matter hubs, with the Nest Hub 2nd generation, Nest Hub Max and Nest Wifi Pro supporting Matter over Wi-Fi and Thread and serving as Thread border routers. In practical terms, that allows Thread-enabled devices to join a home mesh network and communicate more reliably.
The wider significance of Thread 1.4 is that it standardises how routers share network credentials, which should reduce friction when adding new accessories and third-party apps to an existing smart home. Industry coverage from TechRadar and T3 says the update is meant to improve interoperability between Thread Border Routers and other connected devices, while also lowering latency and cutting random drop-outs that can disrupt automations and voice commands.
