Google’s latest teaser for the Pixel Watch 5 highlights a shift towards a more traditional watch appearance, while internal upgrades point to smarter features and potential price increase ahead of its August 12 reveal.
Google has begun teasing the Pixel Watch 5 ahead of its Made by Google event on August 12, using a short, moody video that reveals little about the device itself but plenty about the company’s marketing intent. In the clip, Google leans into a familiar jab at rivals, presenting the watch as a product that tracks health, sleep and activity while, as the voiceover puts it, still having “the decency to look like a watch”.
According to 9to5Google, this is the first time Google has directly framed the Pixel Watch’s round shape against the Apple Watch’s rectangular form and Samsung’s more squared-off design. The message is clear: Google wants the Pixel Watch line to be seen not just as another smartwatch, but as a more traditional-looking one with a cleaner silhouette.
The hardware, however, appears to be changing far less than the marketing. Leaked renders and official-style images published by several technology sites suggest the Pixel Watch 5 keeps the same overall design as the Pixel Watch 4, including the charging pins and curved glass. Reports from T3 and Gizchina indicate that Google is sticking with 41mm and 45mm variants, with Wi-Fi and LTE versions expected in both sizes.
Most of the meaningful upgrades are said to be internal. Leak reports point to storage rising from 32GB to 64GB and RAM increasing from 2GB to 3GB, a move aimed at supporting Gemini features on the wrist. T3 said the watch is expected to add AI-driven tools such as smarter alarms and a coaching feature that analyses behavioural patterns, while continuing established health functions including blood oxygen monitoring, atrial fibrillation detection, sleep tracking and heart rate variability analysis.
Price may be one of the few visible changes. Frandroid reported that the 41mm model could rise from €399 to €419 in Europe, citing a Dealabs leak, while Shakil Barkat, a Google vice-president, told 9to5Google that higher memory costs were driving the increase. Other reports suggest Google may also be preparing a slightly broader device refresh at the same event, including the Pixel 11 range and related accessories, but the watch remains one of the clearest product launches scheduled for August 12.
