A recent review reveals the best free offline AI applications for Android, iPhone, and laptops, emphasising privacy benefits and hardware performance, especially on Apple Silicon devices.
In a post on Medium, Jinabyasin said the main problem with offline AI apps is that many still rely on the internet to work. After testing 13 free tools in full airplane mode across Android phones, iPhones and laptops, the review argues that only a handful genuinely operate without a network connection once they are set up.
For Android users, the report names PocketPal AI as the strongest free option. The app is designed to run large language models locally on the handset, with no account requirement and no need for cloud processing after installation. PocketPal’s own product information says it supports open-source models from Hugging Face and is aimed at devices with at least 6GB of RAM for smaller models and 8GB for larger ones.
On laptops, Jinabyasin says LM Studio delivered the best performance, especially on Apple Silicon Macs, where the review measured roughly 50 to 60 tokens per second. The app’s Mac listing says it runs models such as Llama, Gemma and Qwen fully on-device, while a broader LM Studio description says it also works on Windows and Linux as a local model browser, chat interface and OpenAI-compatible server. Recent hardware reporting suggests Apple Silicon remains highly competitive for local AI workloads, while a recent research paper on Apple Silicon inference says native Metal optimisation can further improve throughput.
For offline transcription, the review highlights Vibe, which uses OpenAI’s Whisper model locally and, in the author’s tests, reached a 4.2% word error rate. That places it close to paid cloud services while keeping processing on the device. The article argues that the key value of this category is not only cost but privacy, since the apps it recommends avoid sending data to external servers once installed.
