Huawei launches the lightweight MateBook Pro S featuring a groundbreaking hardware-based Privacy Display and HarmonyOS integration, challenging Apple’s MacBook Air in portability and privacy features.
Huawei has unveiled the MateBook Pro S, a 14-inch laptop that places design and privacy at the centre of its pitch. At 798 grams, it is positioned as one of the lightest notebooks in its class and is being framed as a direct challenge to Apple’s MacBook Air on portability, while also signalling that Huawei wants to compete on hardware features as much as software.
The new model arrives in five colours: Summer Purple, Dawn Yellow, Smoke Gray, Velvet White and Feather Black. Huawei Central reported that the thin chassis and hinge design are meant to underline the device’s premium positioning, while the company’s teaser materials indicate that HarmonyOS will be part of the platform strategy.
The main technical distinction is Huawei’s Privacy Display system, which the company says is built into the panel rather than added as a software-only filter. Huawei describes it as a 3.1K Smart Shield Privacy Display that remains clear when viewed head-on but reduces side visibility when privacy mode is enabled. The system uses dual-pixel technology with two independent sets of pixels, allowing the screen to switch between a shared-viewing mode and a privacy-protection mode. Huawei says a reminder appears when the notebook detects someone looking at the screen, letting the user activate privacy mode with a single tap.
That approach gives Huawei a more hardware-driven answer to the familiar problem of screen peeking on public transport, in cafés or open-plan offices. Huawei Central also reported that the MateBook Pro S is expected to use the Kirin XE90 chipset, which the company says improves single-core performance and energy efficiency over its predecessor. Combined with Huawei’s earlier HarmonyOS-powered MateBook Pro, the launch suggests the company is building a broader PC line around lighter hardware, proprietary software and display-level privacy features.
