Polychromatic 0.9.8 enhances device support and localisation for Razer lighting on Linux

The latest Polychromatic update introduces support for Razer Blade 16 (2023), improves performance, and expands localisation options, reflecting ongoing development in Linux device management tools.

Polychromatic 0.9.8 has arrived as a maintenance update to the open-source Linux application used to manage Razer lighting and other device settings through OpenRazer. Linuxiac reported that the release adds support for the Razer Blade 16 (2023), extending the project’s device coverage for users with newer hardware.

The update also focuses on performance and usability. According to the changelog referenced by Linuxiac, the brightness slider has been tuned to reduce lag when changing lighting levels, while icon lookup handling has been improved for users selecting custom effect icons. The release also fixes a zombie process that could remain after launching the tray applet from Polychromatic’s Controller application.

Polychromatic 0.9.8 further broadens the project’s localisation work. The application now supports translation of its AppStream metainfo, and the release adds Traditional Chinese translations while updating existing Polish and Russian language files. That makes the software easier to maintain in software stores and package managers that rely on AppStream metadata.

The broader project has been steadily evolving beyond small fixes. Phoronix reported that Polychromatic 0.9 moved the interface to PyQt6, keeping the look and feel close to the earlier PyQt5 version while modernising the toolkit underneath. Earlier releases also added a DPI stage editor, support for hardware DPI buttons on compatible mice and new device maps for several Razer peripherals, reflecting Polychromatic’s role as a focused front-end rather than a full driver stack. The project’s documentation continues to recommend distribution packages where available, with Flatpak offering a more limited experience.
