Users would also need to switch on a new Reference mode in the Camera app before the feature becomes available.
The idea reflects a wider push to address the growing problem of misleading synthetic images and altered photos. Apple has already been expanding its image tools with Apple Intelligence, including editing features that can reshape a picture, extend its edges or remove objects. Google, meanwhile, continues to promote its SynthID watermarking system for generative content. Reference Image would sit alongside those efforts, but with a different goal: confirming provenance rather than marking AI output.
That could make the feature useful in cases where authenticity matters, particularly as image manipulation becomes easier and more convincing. A built-in verification system would give Apple a way to distinguish a real iPhone photograph from a file that has been edited or created elsewhere, though the company has not publicly confirmed the feature.
For now, the feature remains only a sign in beta software, so there is no guarantee it will reach the public release of iOS 27. Apple often tests capabilities that never appear in the final version, and Reference Image may be one of them.
