Recent sharp rises in memory prices and supply constraints have unsettled consumers, prompting experts to recommend DDR5 as the safer choice for future-proof desktops despite ongoing market instability.
Memory prices have risen sharply in recent months, and the market for desktop upgrades has become unusually unstable. TechRadar’s current deal round-up reflects that shift, with savings now being tracked closely across leading brands such as Corsair, G.Skill, Kingston and Team Group. The site’s editor’s picks focus on DDR5 kits for users who want a straightforward performance boost without replacing a graphics card or processor.
The broader backdrop is less reassuring. Tom’s Hardware reported in June 2025 that some DDR4 modules had jumped by as much as 40% in a single week, with prices rising so quickly that older memory briefly cost more than DDR5 in some cases. A separate TechSpot report linked the surge to manufacturers redirecting production towards DDR5 and newer memory generations, tightening supply just as demand remained firm.
By late 2025, the pricing picture had become even more distorted. PC Gamer reported in October that DDR4-3200 spot prices had nearly doubled and, in a striking reversal, sat well above DDR5. TechSpot also noted in September that DDR4 prices had moved past DDR5 as production priorities shifted towards higher-margin AI memory. Then, by January 2026, Tom’s Hardware said prices were beginning to level off, but only at inflated levels, with PCPartPicker data showing some DDR4 and DDR5 kits stabilising after months of increases.
That leaves buyers in a difficult position, but the practical advice is clearer than the pricing. For new systems, DDR5 is now the safer default, particularly for gaming, creative work and heavy multitasking, because the value gap against DDR4 has largely narrowed or inverted. TechRadar’s listed deals highlight the current sweet spot: 32GB kits for mainstream desktops, 64GB options for demanding workloads and faster 6000MT/s kits with AMD EXPO or Intel XMP support for easier tuning. Even so, the market remains volatile, so the best offer today may not hold for long.
