Abode introduces two new products designed to secure often-overlooked parts of the home, including garages and outdoor storage, expanding its modular security platform with Apple Home compatibility.
Abode is broadening its Apple Home-compatible security range with two new products aimed at the parts of a property that are often left out of a standard setup. The company is targeting garages, gates, sheds and detached storage areas with a Garage Tilt Sensor and an Outdoor Contact Sensor, extending a system that already works with Apple Home, Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, according to Abode’s support material.
The Garage Tilt Sensor is designed for surfaces that open by tilting rather than swinging, such as up-and-over garage doors, attic hatches and basement windows. Abode says it detects movement once a panel shifts more than 45 degrees from its resting position, sending alerts through the Abode app when a door or hatch begins to open or close. The device is wireless and, under optimal conditions, the company claims battery life of up to 10 years.
The Outdoor Contact Sensor is built for exterior use and carries an IP66 rating, meaning it is intended to withstand dust and strong water jets. Abode positions it for metal gates, sheds, storage units, mailboxes and detached garages. The sensor uses a stronger magnet and a wider activation gap than a typical indoor contact sensor, which Abode says should help cut down on false alarms when it is fitted outside. Both sensors are said to offer connectivity of up to 500 feet in ideal conditions, with setup guidance that includes connection testing before final mounting.
The new devices also tie into Abode’s CUE automation engine, which lets users build responses around events outside the main home. In Abode’s example, a gate opening after dark could switch on driveway lights, while a garage door left open for more than 10 minutes could be prompted to close automatically. That reflects Abode’s wider pitch: a modular security platform that can be expanded to suit different homes, while also working through Apple HomeKit, Alexa and Google Assistant. The Garage Tilt Sensor is priced at $34.99 and the Outdoor Contact Sensor at $49.99.
