Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 shows improvements but durability remains a challenge

The latest Galaxy Z Fold 8 demonstrates enhanced build quality and design refinements, yet durability tests reveal it still faces limitations inherent to foldable technology, highlighting the balance between innovation and robustness.

A durability test by JerryRigEverything suggests Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z Fold 8 is tougher than earlier generations, but still bound by the limits of the foldable format. The inner flexible panel, which Samsung markets as Flex Titanium, appears relatively soft and can pick up marks from a fingernail, while the rear panel’s protective glass performs more like that of a conventional premium smartphone. The hinge, by contrast, looks significantly reinforced and held up under bending stress.

That mixed result fits the wider picture of foldables in 2026: they are better built than before, yet still more vulnerable than slab-style phones. Samsung’s device is also far from affordable, with a US starting price of about $1,900, placing it firmly in the ultra-premium bracket.

Reviews from Tom’s Guide say the Fold 8 is designed to feel more compact in the hand, with a 5.5-inch cover screen and a 7.6-inch main display. The publication also points to a reduced crease, improved anti-glare coating and strong performance from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, especially for multitasking. The camera system, however, remains a compromise: it includes dual 50-megapixel rear sensors but no dedicated telephoto lens.

Digital Camera World adds that the phone reaches 120Hz on both displays, can hit a peak brightness of 3,000 nits and comes with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage in some configurations. SamMobile, meanwhile, reports that Samsung is using Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 on the outer display, IP48 protection against dust and water, and a hinge rated for 500,000 folds. Taken together, the reports suggest a foldable that is increasingly refined, but still not as rugged as a traditional handset.
