Andover Audio’s FreePlay redefines portable hi-fi with stereo sound and smart features

Andover Audio launches its first portable Bluetooth hi-fi speaker, the FreePlay, promising high-fidelity sound, extensive outdoor features, and advanced connectivity, marking a bold step into the portable premium audio market.

Andover Audio has moved beyond its turntables and powered speakers with the FreePlay, its first portable Bluetooth hi-fi speaker. The Boston-based company says the unit is meant to preserve the scale and tonal balance of a home system while remaining practical enough for patios, travel and outdoor listening. Its design centres on true stereo playback rather than the single-driver approach common in many portable speakers, with two 5.25-inch aluminium cone woofers, twin 25 mm dome tweeters and a rear passive radiator.

The FreePlay also includes several features aimed at making it useful away from the mains. Andover says it offers more than 24 hours of playback at moderate volume, an IP67-rated enclosure for dust and water resistance, and a selectable loudness setting with a 6 dB boost for outdoor use. It also supports Bluetooth LE Audio and can be linked with up to 99 other FreePlay units for synchronised playback, which is unusually ambitious for a consumer portable speaker.

Other practical touches underline the product’s positioning as a premium all-purpose speaker. The top surface includes a wireless charging pad for iPhones, while a bidirectional USB-C port can charge connected devices or the speaker itself. An optional 3.5 mm input is also available for wired listening. Taken together, the FreePlay looks like an attempt to bring Andover’s house sound into a category that is usually defined more by convenience than by fidelity.
