Optical Limits’ re-evaluation of the Viltrox AF 15mm f/1.7 Air XF highlights improvements, solidifying its status as a compact, affordable wide-angle option for APS-C sensors despite minor weaknesses like vignetting and sun star performance.
Optical Limits has given the Viltrox AF 15mm f/1.7 Air XF a second look in silver, and the revised assessment is more favourable than the earlier verdict. The site says the retest produced better results than before, reinforcing the lens’s reputation as a compact, low-cost wide angle for Fujifilm X-mount APS-C cameras. B&H Photo and Viltrox describe it as a 22.5mm full-frame equivalent with a bright f/1.7 aperture, a 58mm filter thread and a 180g body.
The updated review says sharpness is broadly solid on 26-megapixel sensors once the lens is stopped down to f/2.8, while f/1.7 remains usable. Optical Limits adds that 40-megapixel bodies are more demanding, which is a familiar trade-off for lenses in this class. Distortion is described as low but slightly wavy, while vignetting is the main weakness, something the publication says is not surprising given the lens’s small size.
That balance of strengths and compromises is echoed elsewhere. Amateur Photographer says the lens delivers strong image quality, with good sharpness across the frame and well-controlled chromatic aberration. Viltrox’s own product information emphasises the optic’s wide field of view, fast autofocus and lightweight build, along with 12 elements in 10 groups that include extra-low dispersion, high-refractive-index and aspherical elements. The company also says firmware can be updated through a USB-C port.
For buyers, the picture remains clear: the Viltrox 15mm is attractive because it is small, affordable and capable, not because it is flawless. Optical Limits says sun stars are a weaker point, and its earlier and retested conclusions both point to the same core message. This is a lens that offers very good value, but users who are sensitive to edge shading may still want to weigh that against its compact design.
