Google’s Gemini AI assistant hits a milestone of over 1 billion monthly users, strengthening its position in an increasingly crowded market while facing leadership changes and model quality challenges.
Google said Gemini has passed 1 billion monthly users, marking a major milestone for its artificial intelligence assistant as competition intensifies across the sector. Sundar Pichai, the chief executive, said it was the company’s fastest-growing product and only the 14th Google service to reach that scale. The figure is based on usage of the Gemini app across Google’s wider ecosystem, including Search, Gmail, Maps and YouTube.
The announcement comes at a sensitive moment for Google DeepMind, which has been undergoing a management shake-up. Demis Hassabis has stepped back from day-to-day oversight of the lab, while several senior researchers have left, among them Jeff Dean, one of the most influential figures in Google’s engineering ranks. The changes add pressure as Google tries to keep pace in a market that has become far more crowded and commercially valuable.
Google’s broader challenge is not just reach but momentum in model quality. Gemini 3.5 Pro, which was initially expected in June, has still not been released, while rivals have introduced systems seen as stronger at code generation, an area that now carries outsized business importance. Even so, Google retains a powerful advantage in distribution, with Gemini woven into products used by hundreds of millions of people every day.
That scale helps explain the pace of Gemini’s rise. TechCrunch reported in July that the assistant had more than 950 million monthly users, up sharply from earlier in the year, while PCWorld said in February it had crossed 750 million. Both reports pointed to fast adoption across Google products, and to features such as Daily Brief and Gemini Spark, along with strong iPhone uptake. Research from Sensor Tower has also indicated that ChatGPT’s share of the AI assistant market has fallen below 50%, underlining how quickly the competitive picture is shifting.
OpenAI said in July that it had reached 1 billion users across its interfaces, led by ChatGPT, though it did not specify whether that figure referred to monthly or weekly use. For Google and OpenAI alike, audience scale is becoming a key measure of strength, not only for product credibility but also for future valuation and investor interest.
