Samsung accelerates foldable phone production in response to surging demand for Galaxy Z Fold 8

Samsung is set to increase production of its Galaxy Z Fold 8 after unexpectedly high demand for the device, signalling a shift in foldable smartphone competitiveness and industry direction.

Samsung is reportedly preparing to lift production of its next foldable phone after demand for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 ran well ahead of expectations. South Korean outlet ETNews said the company has ordered an additional 1 million units this week, a sign that the wider design is drawing stronger early interest than Samsung had forecast.

According to PhoneArena, Samsung has now revised its manufacturing plan for the “Wide” version to 2.8 million units, overtaking the 2 million units planned for the standard “Ultra” model. Sammobile reported that Samsung expects the wider Fold 8 to outsell both the Fold 8 Ultra and the Flip 8 during the first three months after launch, underlining the company’s confidence in the new format.

The appeal appears to lie in the screen shape as much as the hardware itself. TechRadar and Android Central both reported that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 uses a 4:3 foldable display ratio on a 7.6-inch panel, a layout intended to make video playback, multitasking and general content viewing feel less cramped. The wider form factor also brings the device closer to a compact, passport-sized shape, sitting between Samsung’s Flip and Ultra-style foldables.

The stronger-than-expected response may also have broader industry implications. ETNews and TechRadar said Samsung’s early lead could help define the direction of the foldable market just as Apple is preparing its own foldable iPhone, which is also expected to use a similar wide-screen approach. For now, Samsung appears to have found a design that is resonating with buyers, and its latest production change suggests it is moving quickly to avoid supply shortages.
