Sonos aims to reinvent headphones with Ace Ultra for seamless home integration

Sonos is set to reposition its headphone offering with the upcoming Ace Ultra, designed to enhance connectivity, ecosystem integration, and voice control, addressing the shortcomings of its first model and aligning with its broader home-audio strategy.

Sonos is preparing a second attempt at the headphone market after admitting, in effect, that the first Ace did not fully deliver. The new model, expected this autumn and referred to as the Ace Ultra, is being positioned as a corrective rather than a simple refresh. The company appears to be aiming for a product that fits more naturally into its wider home-audio ecosystem, especially for users who already rely on Sonos speakers and soundbars.

One likely area of improvement is connectivity. The original Ace already used Wi-Fi when working with Sonos soundbars, so the appearance of 2.4GHz and 5GHz support in the new filing does not, by itself, prove full network integration. Even so, it points to a device that may be designed to behave less like a standard wireless headset and more like a resident part of the home network, closer in concept to Sonos’ connected speakers.

Voice control is another clue. The filing suggests support for Sonos Voice Control, while Bloomberg has reported that Sonos wants artificial intelligence and conversational computing to become a major part of future products. For a screenless device such as headphones, that would make practical sense: voice input could take a larger role in playback control, device interaction and everyday use.

The Ace Ultra therefore looks less like a cosmetic successor and more like an attempt to answer the structural weaknesses of the original model. If Sonos can combine stronger connectivity, tighter ecosystem integration and a more useful voice interface, it may finally give the category a product that feels fully aligned with the company’s home-audio strategy.
