At its Made by Google event, Google unveiled the Pixel Watch 5 with advanced health features and a new Pixel Tag, signalling a significant push into the wearable and finder-tag markets amidst a broader hardware refresh.
Google used its Made by Google event to introduce a broader hardware refresh, but the new accessories drew attention of their own. The company unveiled the Pixel Watch 5 and the Pixel Tag, while also giving Pixel Buds Pro 2 only a minor update in the form of a new olive colourway. The watch is positioned as the main wearable update, while the tag marks Google’s entry into the finder-tag market.
The Pixel Watch 5 arrives in 41mm and 45mm versions with a domed Actua 360 AMOLED display rated at 3,000 nits of peak brightness and a 60Hz refresh rate. Google says the watch uses custom 3D Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and is rated for 5 ATM pressure resistance and IP68 dust and water protection. Battery capacity differs by size, with the smaller model at 332mAh and the larger one at 465mAh. Google claims up to 48 hours and 72 hours of use with Battery Saver enabled, and says the Quick Charge Dock can take the watch from empty to 50% in about 15 minutes. Both versions use the Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated SoC, a Cortex-M55 co-processor, 64GB of eMMC storage and Wear OS 7.0. Connectivity includes 4G LTE, UMTS, Bluetooth 6.0, Wi-Fi, NFC, Ultra-Wideband and Satellite SOS support.
Google is also leaning further into health and fitness features. The company highlights Insulin Resistance Trend and Blood Pressure Trend tools, along with Health Guardian for passive monitoring, Breathing Emergency Detection, irregular rhythm notifications with AFib detection and loss of pulse alerts. The fitness package supports more than 50 exercises, tailored workouts and expanded tracking for performance, sleep and recovery. Google also says Gemini-powered features can surface practical information such as flight updates and estimated arrival times when users raise their wrist and ask a question. Leaked images published before the launch suggested the design would stay close to the previous generation, which now appears to be the case.
The Pixel Tag is Google’s first dedicated finder tag and is built around an accelerometer and an integrated speaker. It has an oblong metal-and-plastic body, comes only in Fog, and carries an IP67 rating that should protect it from dust and temporary immersion in water. Google says the replaceable CR2032 battery can last up to a year. The tag also supports Ultra Wideband and Bluetooth Channel Sounding, which should improve locating accuracy. In Malaysia, the Pixel Watch 5 starts at RM1,799 for the 41mm model and RM1,999 for the 45mm model, with pre-orders open and wider availability set for August 20. Google has not yet confirmed local pricing for the Pixel Tag, although overseas listings point to a US$29 price.
