Google has improved the installation times of over-the-air updates for Pixel phones, cutting down what used to be lengthy waits to as little as 10-15 minutes, marking a major stride in a long-standing software update issue.
Google appears to have tackled one of the Pixel line’s most persistent irritations: painfully slow over-the-air updates. According to Android Central and 9to5Google, recent software changes have sharply reduced installation times on Pixel phones, with some updates now finishing in roughly 10 to 15 minutes instead of the much longer waits users were used to.
That improvement matters because Google’s so-called seamless update system has long been a weak point of an otherwise tightly integrated hardware and software platform. Android Central said the gains were first seen in Android 14 QPR2 beta builds, where install times fell significantly, suggesting Google has at last improved the preparation and handover process that normally slows down an update before the phone restarts.
The company has also been working on broader changes to Android’s update pipeline. Android Central reported that a patch submitted to the Android Open Source Project aimed to cut the install time for a 2.2GB over-the-air package from about 23 minutes to around 13 minutes. Separate reporting from Android Central and 9to5Google said older Pixel models, including the Pixel 6, Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 series, have already benefited from quieter kernel-level improvements in recent security updates.
That context makes the latest Pixel 11 behaviour more striking. Android Headlines said a 621MB update on its review unit downloaded and moved to reboot unusually quickly, with the process appearing far faster than the long waits Pixel owners have come to expect. The same report also pointed to smaller quality-of-life changes in the new series, including expanded Quick Share support for tapping one phone against another to transfer contact details, photos, videos and other files, with a wider roll-out expected later.
