Lenovo’s hybrid AI strategy shifts focus to context-aware systems that serve across devices

Lenovo is pioneering a new approach to AI, emphasising contextual understanding and local processing to create seamless, privacy-conscious experiences across its hardware ecosystem, signalling a disruptive shift in AI deployment.

Lenovo is making a case that the next phase of artificial intelligence will be less about prompts and more about context. In a recent company essay, Luca Rossi, who leads Lenovo’s Intelligent Devices Group, argued that AI should understand the situation a user is in, decide whether a task belongs on the device or in the cloud, and respond with enough awareness to be useful before a person has to spell everything out.

That argument fits Lenovo’s wider product direction. At CES 2026, the company introduced Lenovo Qira and Motorola Qira as a Personal Ambient Intelligence System built to work across PCs, smartphones, tablets and wearables. Lenovo said the system is designed to operate at the platform level rather than as a separate app, learning intent over time and handling information locally on devices to reduce privacy exposure.

The company is presenting Qira as a single AI layer across its hardware ecosystem, rather than a standalone assistant confined to one product line. Lenovo and Motorola have said the system can act across supported devices, apps and services with user permission, while also adapting to a user’s habits and workflow. A separate report from Windows Central said the rollout is expected to begin on more than 20 devices across nine regions, with support for six languages at launch, although that detail has not been independently confirmed by Lenovo in the material supplied.

Rossi’s broader point is that AI will need to run in the right place, not always in the biggest model available in the cloud. Lenovo says some workloads are better handled locally because they depend on low latency, device context or sensitive data that should stay close to the user. The company also argues that costs become harder to justify when every task is routed to a large cloud model, especially in enterprise settings where AI agents may make repeated calls across long workflows.

That is where Lenovo’s hybrid AI strategy comes in.
