Google launches Pixel 11 with a focus on AI and enhanced photography features

Google has unveiled the Pixel 11 family, placing a stronger emphasis on artificial intelligence as it seeks to widen use of its Gemini platform. According to AP, buyers in the United States can order the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL and Pixel 11 Pro Fold from August 12, with starting prices of $900, $1,100, $1,300 and $1,900. Each base price is $100 higher than the equivalent model in last year’s line-up.

The new phones are built around features designed to make Google’s AI more visible in day-to-day use. AP reported that the devices can translate video, podcasts and voice messages in real time, while customers who buy the Pro models or above will receive six months of Google’s AI Pro plan at no extra cost. That offer appears aimed at steering more users towards Gemini, Google’s answer to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, as the company tries to convert smartphone buyers into AI subscribers as well.

Google has also pushed further on imaging. The company says Pixel camera tools now include functions such as Pro Zoom, which can reach 100x, alongside Night Sight for low-light photography, Best Take for combining similar images and Magic Editor features such as Reimagine and Auto Frame. AP said the new Pixel 11 range adds a mode called Magic Capture, which can automatically record multiple photos and videos with a single press of the shutter button, while improved light sensing should help the cameras cope better in darker settings.

Other updates focus on storage, battery life and charging. Google said the standard storage on the new phones has doubled to 256GB, battery life has been extended to 30 hours and wireless charging has been made faster. The Pro models also gain an Instant Night Sight feature that is designed to reduce waiting time in low light, allowing users to hold the phone more steadily while the image is captured.
