Honor set to launch the Robot Phone in China on August 18, 2026, featuring a pioneering motorised camera module with a 200-megapixel sensor and AI-driven subject tracking, aiming to redefine mobile videography for creators.
Honor is preparing to put one of the most unusual smartphone camera systems in years into the market, with the Robot Phone due to arrive in China on August 18, 2026. The device centres on a motorised camera module that can physically move rather than relying only on digital stabilisation, giving it a design more closely associated with dedicated filming gear than a conventional handset.
According to Gizmochina, Honor has confirmed a 200-megapixel main camera with a 1/1.28-inch sensor and f/1.6 aperture, mounted on a three-axis gimbal. The phone also carries a 50-megapixel ultra-wide lens and a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera. The same report said the imaging system uses Honor’s in-house Yuguang H1 chip, while the gimbal motor weighs just 2.6 grams, underlining how much engineering has gone into fitting a mechanical system into a handset.
The company has also positioned the Robot Phone as a creator-focused device. Android Central reported that Honor has tied the product to ARRI, the German cinema camera company, suggesting an emphasis on colour management and video workflows that go beyond typical smartphone photography. MegaMobileContent said the phone uses a 4DoF, or four-degrees-of-freedom, gimbal built into the device, which is intended to deliver smoother movement and more controlled framing than software stabilisation alone.
The moving camera is also meant to do more than keep footage steady. TechCrunch reported earlier this year that Honor described the phone as capable of reacting to music and using gesture-driven movements, while a prototype shown at Mobile World Congress was said to track subjects on a miniaturised robotic arm and even nod or shake in response to voice commands. That aligns with PhoneArena’s report that the system is designed to follow subjects automatically, a feature that could appeal to vloggers and short-form video creators.
The broader hardware appears aimed at flagship buyers rather than casual users. The phone is expected to ship with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, a 6.31-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a 7,060mAh battery and fast wired and wireless charging. TechPatrol reported two memory and storage options, priced from 9,999 yuan for the 12GB/512GB version to 12,999 yuan for the 16GB/1TB model. Whether that combination will justify the likely premium will depend on how well the mechanical camera system performs in real-world use, but Honor has clearly built the Robot Phone to stand apart from the standard flagship formula.
