Qualcomm unveils its new Snapdragon C platform aiming to revolutionise low-cost Windows laptops with improved battery life and performance, challenging Intel’s dominance in the sub-$500 segment.
Qualcomm has moved to shore up one of the most stubborn weaknesses in low-cost laptops: poor battery life paired with sluggish performance. The company’s new Snapdragon C platform is aimed at entry-level Windows machines starting at about $300 and is pitched as a way to bring faster everyday computing, quieter thermals and longer unplugged use to devices that have traditionally been built to hit the lowest possible price.
At the centre of the platform is an 8-core Kryo processor built on a 6-nanometre process, with a peak clock speed of 3.0 GHz, alongside Adreno graphics, a Hexagon neural processing unit and support for up to 16GB of LPDDR5, LPDDR5x or LPDDR4x memory. Qualcomm says the chip can outperform Intel’s N250 in battery-powered use, while also using markedly less energy for common tasks such as video calls, streaming and idle background activity. The company is also promising Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 6.0, plus support for PCIe 3.0 NVMe and UFS storage.
The launch is strategically important because the sub-$500 laptop market has been under pressure from rising memory costs, which analysts say could make the segment harder to sustain before the end of the decade. Qualcomm is therefore targeting students, families, small businesses and frontline workers with a platform that it says is intended for reliable browsing, productivity, streaming and video conferencing without the compromises that usually come with budget hardware. Tom’s Hardware reported that the chip is based on Qualcomm’s Kryo smartphone lineage, while Semicurrent noted that the device-level AI engine falls short of Copilot+ requirements.
Software support remains the key question for Windows on Arm, but that hurdle has eased as more mainstream applications now run natively or through improved compatibility layers. Qualcomm and industry reports indicate that Acer, Asus, HP and Lenovo are among the manufacturers preparing Snapdragon C systems, with the first models expected later in 2026. Windows Central said Acer’s Aspire Go 15 is set to be the first such laptop, underscoring how quickly the platform could move from specification sheet to store shelf.
