Google’s latest smartwatch line-up appears to leave buyers with an awkward choice. According to TechAdvisor, the Pixel Watch 5 arrives without a meaningful battery upgrade and without a clear headline feature that would justify paying more than before. That matters because the Pixel Watch 4 is still on sale at a lower price and is expected to inherit much of the new model’s software support, making the older watch look like the more rational purchase for many users.
Against that backdrop, the Fitbit Air stands out as the more convincing value proposition. TechAdvisor says it costs £270, or $300, less than the Pixel Watch 5 and feeds its fitness data into the same Google Health app, which reduces the appeal of paying extra for the flagship watch if the main goal is health tracking rather than a full smartwatch experience. The publication argues that, for budget-conscious buyers, Google has already released the more tempting option.
That view is broadly consistent with other early reviews. Android Central describes the Fitbit Air as minimalist, comfortable and easy to live with, while Tom’s Guide highlights its discreet design, lightweight feel and roughly week-long battery life. PhoneArena also points to its continuous heart-rate tracking and its low-friction approach to data collection, saying the device offers health information through Google’s app without requiring a subscription for basic use.
There is, however, a catch. TechRadar says the Fitbit Air’s AI-powered Google Health Coach subscription may not appeal to everyone and that the device feels more limited without it. In other words, the Air seems best suited to users who want a simple tracker rather than a feature-packed watch. For anyone weighing Google’s current wearable options, the old Pixel Watch 4 and the cheaper Fitbit Air may now represent the sharper choices than the pricier new model.
