8849’s Tank 5 Pro is an unusual entry in the rugged phone market: a handset built not only to withstand harsh conditions, but also to replace several separate devices. Notebookcheck reports that it combines thermal imaging with a built-in projector, putting it firmly in the niche of specialist tools rather than ordinary consumer phones.

The hardware is notably ambitious. The phone centres on a 6.73-inch 3K AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and peak brightness rated at 3,000 nits. Under the bonnet sits MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400e, paired with 18GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. That storage can be expanded to 2TB, which should suit users who plan to carry large media libraries, work files or inspection data.

Photography and sensing are a key part of the pitch. According to the official product page, the Tank 5 Pro includes a thermal camera with a 95-degree ultra-wide field of view, while other reports say the thermal system can detect temperature differences as small as 0.05C. The device also carries a 2K DLP projector with autofocus, a 50-megapixel main camera, a 50-megapixel telephoto camera, a 50-megapixel night-vision camera and a 32-megapixel front camera.

Power is another major selling point. AndroidGuys and Notebookcheck both say the phone uses a 17,600mAh battery with 120W charging, a very large capacity by smartphone standards. The Tank 5 Pro is listed at $1,199 in the United States, with pre-orders open and shipping expected between 12 and 16 September 2026. That places it among the most expensive rugged phones on the market, but also among the most feature-packed.
