Acer has launched the Go Air in China as a thin-and-light Windows notebook pitched as a lower-cost rival to Apple’s MacBook Neo. According to Canaltech, the new model is aimed at buyers who want a portable machine without the tighter memory and storage limits seen on the entry-level Apple laptop, while still keeping the price close to the US$800 mark.
The main selling point is its specification balance. Canaltech reports that the Go Air starts with 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and a 512 GB SSD, both above the base configuration typically associated with Apple’s cheapest model. That should give it more headroom for day-to-day multitasking, larger local file libraries and less immediate pressure to upgrade.
Acer has also tried to improve the user experience in ways that matter on a compact laptop. The Go Air uses a 14-inch IPS display with a 120 Hz refresh rate, which should make scrolling and animations feel smoother than on many budget notebooks. It also includes two Thunderbolt 4 ports alongside standard USB connections, reducing reliance on adapters. The company pairs this with an Intel Core 5 320 processor, a 70 Wh battery with fast charging and a claimed weight of 1.19 kg.
The broader context is a small but important shift in the entry-level laptop market. MacRumors and 9to5Mac have both noted how Apple’s MacBook Neo has become a reference point for cheap, compact notebooks, while Macworld says it has already drawn interest from students and cost-conscious buyers. Windows Central, meanwhile, described Acer’s Swift Air 14 as a credible challenger in this segment, suggesting manufacturers are now treating Apple’s budget Mac more directly as a benchmark for design, battery life and everyday usability. If Acer prices the Go Air aggressively outside China, it could become one of the more convincing alternatives for users who want Windows flexibility without giving up the premium feel of an ultra-portable machine.
