The Pixel 10a is currently available at a significant discount on Amazon, signalling Google’s plans to increase prices in response to a global DRAM shortage that is reshaping the smartphone industry, with new models expected to be more expensive.
Google’s Pixel 10a is selling for $424 at Amazon, $75 below its $499 list price, as the company prepares to raise Pixel prices in response to supply pressures that are already reshaping the smartphone market. The discount makes the handset one of the cheapest new-unit prices seen since its March launch, although Google has made clear that the current figure may not last. In a July 24 interview with 9to5Google, vice president of devices Shakil Barkat said Pixel prices would be increased and rolled out “dynamically” to reflect supply conditions, without giving a timetable.
The backdrop is a global DRAM shortage driven by demand for AI infrastructure, which is pulling memory production towards higher-margin components used in data centres. Business Standard reported in February that the squeeze is expected to make smartphones, PCs and televisions more expensive in 2026, while other market analysis has warned that the low-end and mid-range phone segments may feel the strain most sharply. That helps explain why Google has kept the Pixel 10a at its launch price for as long as it has, and why the current Amazon deal is being treated by retailers as a limited window rather than a new baseline.
On paper, the Pixel 10a is not a dramatic overhaul of the Pixel 9a. It uses the same Tensor G4 chip, the same 48-megapixel main camera and 13-megapixel ultrawide lens, and the same 5,100mAh battery. The more meaningful changes are in usability: a completely flat rear panel, a brighter 6.3-inch Actua display rated at up to 3,000 nits, faster 30W wired charging, 10W wireless charging and the Exynos 5400 modem, which adds Satellite SOS support. Google also pairs the phone with a seven-year software promise, extending support through 2033.
That long update window matters more as Android phones become more expensive. A handset bought now will still be supported for years, even if the Pixel 11 arrives at a much higher price point. Reports ahead of Google’s Made by Google event on August 12 suggest the Pixel 11 family could start around $899, with a Tensor G6 chip and a new modem expected to improve performance and efficiency. For buyers coming from a phone that is two or more years old, the Pixel 10a remains the more practical purchase if value is the priority.
There is still a timing issue. Google has not given a date for the price rise Barkat described, which means the Amazon discount could disappear before or after the August 12 launch event. Best Buy is also listing open-box 128GB units at a lower price, but those are not sealed new retail boxes. For anyone considering a Pixel 10a, the calculation is straightforward: this is a solid mid-range Android phone, and it is likely cheaper now than it will be once Google formally adjusts pricing.
