Apple has unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable device featuring a 7.6-inch main display and a 5.4-inch cover screen, aiming to appeal to loyal customers with high-end materials and advanced design, despite its weight and premium pricing.
Apple has entered the foldable smartphone market with the iPhone Duo, a device that pairs a 7.6-inch inner display with a 5.4-inch cover screen and goes on sale in October. According to Apple’s announcement, pre-orders open on 16 October, with deliveries from 23 October. The company says the handset is built around the A20 Pro chip and a custom vapour chamber for heat control, signalling that it is aiming to make foldables feel like a mainstream premium product rather than a technical experiment.
In Korea, the starting price is 3.29 million won for the 256GB model, rising to 5.09 million won for the 2TB version. That puts it well above Samsung’s latest foldables, including the Galaxy Z Fold8, which the lead report says starts at 2.2781 million won. The pricing makes clear that Apple is not targeting the mass market first; it is betting that its most loyal customers will pay a significant premium for an unfamiliar form factor.
Apple is also using design to distinguish the device from rivals. The company says the iPhone Duo is made from grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish and will come in star white and night sky. TechCrunch reported that Apple has also added an under-display camera on the inner panel and a nanotexture finish intended to cut glare and make the crease less visible. Those choices suggest Apple is trying to answer long-running criticisms of foldables: visible seams, reflections and compromises in everyday use.
The company is presenting the Duo as a device that should be used open as much as closed. Apple says the aspect ratios of the two displays are aligned so video and apps continue more naturally when the handset is unfolded, while the larger panel is meant to support multi-tasking in the way an iPad does. The lead report also notes that Apple has emphasised sustained performance, combining the chip, thermal system and dual-battery arrangement to reduce the throttling that can affect foldable phones under load.
Even so, the hardware remains heavy and thick by modern flagship standards. The lead report puts the device at 254g, which is more than Samsung’s latest foldables, and says it measures 5.2mm when open and 11.3mm when shut. Apple appears to be accepting that trade-off in exchange for a larger display and higher-end materials. Whether that balance persuades buyers will be the key test as the company tries to turn its late arrival into an advantage.
