Apple introduces controlled Watch for Kids with new parental supervision features in Canada

Apple’s latest child-focused Apple Watch offers parents enhanced control and safety features, serving as a smartphone alternative for children not yet ready for full device independence.

Apple’s child-focused Watch setup is designed as a first connected device for families who are not ready to give a child an iPhone. According to Apple and Canadian carrier information, the watch can handle calls, messages and location sharing on its own, provided it is a cellular model and is managed through a parent’s iPhone via Family Setup. That makes it a narrower, more controlled option than a phone, while still giving children a way to stay in touch.

In Canada, the service is available through Bell, Rogers, Telus and SaskTel, with plans starting from around $10 to $15 a month depending on the provider and data allowance. Apple’s support guidance says the feature requires a cellular-capable Apple Watch and an iPhone for initial setup, and Apple says the child does not need their own iPhone to use it. Rogers and Telus both describe dedicated child plans that include the child’s own watch number, while Bell and SaskTel offer standalone smartwatch services for family use.

The main attraction is parental control. Apple says Family Setup lets adults approve contacts, manage location sharing and set limits through Screen Time. Schooltime reduces distractions during lessons by quietening notifications and locking the watch into a simpler display, while Downtime, app limits and communication restrictions help parents control when and how the watch can be used. Apple’s newer marketing for the feature, now branded Apple Watch For Your Kids, presents these tools as part of a broader effort to make digital independence safer and more gradual.

Safety features remain central to the pitch. Parents can receive alerts when a child arrives at or leaves school, home or another saved location through Find My. In an emergency, the watch can contact emergency services and share the child’s location. Apple also highlights activity tracking, which is adjusted for children by measuring active time rather than adult-style calorie burn.

The appeal, then, is less about entertainment than supervision with flexibility. Apple Watch For Your Kids offers communication, basic organisation tools and location awareness in a device that is deliberately more limited than a smartphone. For families looking to bridge the gap between no device and a full phone, it is a practical compromise, though it only makes sense if a child is ready to charge it, wear it consistently and use it responsibly.
