The iPhone 17 Pro introduces minor design tweaks and substantial camera enhancements, maintaining its position as a top-performing multimedia smartphone amid ongoing distribution and durability concerns.
Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro arrives as a refinement rather than a reinvention, but that is not a weakness in a handset already aimed at people who care as much about media performance as raw speed. What Hi-Fi? says it remains the company’s strongest portable option for films and music, even though it is already close to being replaced by a newer model. In practical terms, that also means it is likely to become more attractive as retailers clear stock.
The design changes are more significant than the specifications might suggest. What Hi-Fi? describes the new full-width camera plateau as striking at first but more balanced in use, while the shift from titanium to aluminium makes the phone feel smoother and more comfortable in the hand. TechRadar similarly notes the revised aluminium body, the A19 Pro chip and the vapour chamber cooling system, which together are meant to support sustained performance and better efficiency.
The 6.3-inch OLED panel is broadly familiar on paper, yet Apple has pushed it harder for outdoor use. According to What Hi-Fi?, the new anti-reflective layer and 3,000-nit peak brightness make a clear difference in glare-heavy conditions, while the display keeps the rich blacks and colour accuracy that have long defined the Pro range. TechRadar’s review reaches a similar conclusion, saying the screen remains sharp, bright and responsive at 120Hz.
Picture quality is where the iPhone 17 Pro most convincingly earns its keep. What Hi-Fi? found the image to be a touch richer and deeper than on the 16 Pro, with slightly denser blacks and more lifelike skin tones, without tipping into over-saturation. It also said the phone is easier to watch in bright sunlight, where the reduced reflections are more useful than a simple brightness increase. TechRadar’s review highlights the same panel strengths, while the standard iPhone 17 appears to come very close, suggesting the Pro’s advantage is real but incremental.
Apple has also upgraded the camera system in a way that matters to everyday use. TechRadar says all three rear cameras are now 48MP, with a 4x optical zoom that can be cropped to 8x, while the front camera rises to 18MP and gains a square sensor for easier portrait and landscape framing. That should make selfies, video calls and casual filming more flexible, although TechRadar also reports that Night mode in Portrait mode has been removed, a change that has not been fully explained by Apple.
Battery life and endurance round out the package. What Hi-Fi? rates the phone for up to 31 hours of video playback and says the improved thermal design helps it avoid throttling during heavier use, while TechRadar puts battery life at up to 30 hours and says the device is especially appealing for buyers who want Pro-level capability without the larger Pro Max form. There are, however, some caveats around durability and finish: TechRadar has reported on scratch concerns around the camera bar, while Apple has said many marks seen on display units are residue from MagSafe stands rather than permanent damage. TechRadar has also reported isolated complaints about colour change on some Cosmic Orange devices, though Apple has not publicly confirmed a widespread issue.
