Apple’s latest iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models introduce a 48-megapixel sensor, on-device intelligence, and the biggest battery gains yet, signalling a major leap in smartphone innovation this year.
Apple has used its latest Pro iPhones to push further into camera control, on-device intelligence and battery gains, with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max positioned as the company’s most technically ambitious handsets this year. According to Apple’s newsroom announcement, both models centre on a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, the A20 Pro chip and a redesigned vapour chamber for better thermal control. Apple also says the Pro Max delivers the biggest battery-life uplift ever seen on an iPhone. The phones come in black, silver, glacier and burgundy, with pre-orders due to begin on 12 September and availability from 18 September.
The two devices share most of their core platform, but Apple has kept the familiar split between a more compact Pro model and a larger Pro Max. Apple’s specifications page lists a 6.3-inch display for the Pro and a 6.9-inch panel for the Pro Max, each using a Super Retina XDR OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and HDR support. The company says the A20 Pro is its first iPhone chip made on a 2nm process, paired with a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU and a 32-core Neural Engine. Both phones support storage up to 2TB, while the Pro Max is aimed at users who want the biggest display and the longest endurance.
Photography is the clearest area of change. Apple says the new main camera can vary its aperture to improve depth-of-field control and low-light performance, while MacRumors reports that the system can move between ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4 depending on conditions. Apple has also added more advanced Pro controls inside the Camera app, alongside video features that include ProRes, ProRes RAW and Dolby Vision HDR. Another new tool, Reference Image, is intended to help verify whether a picture has been altered, reflecting Apple’s attempt to address the growing problem of synthetic and manipulated imagery.
Software is also a larger part of the pitch. Apple says iOS 27 brings Siri AI with Apple Intelligence, including contextual awareness across messages, mail and photos, as well as on-screen awareness and camera-based actions. The company also highlights improved Live Activities on a smaller Dynamic Island, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and new cellular hardware. In the Philippines, Tech Pinas reports that Apple has already published local pricing, with the iPhone 18 Pro starting at PHP 94,990 and the Pro Max at PHP 99,990, although local availability has not yet been confirmed.
