ASUS launches the 2026 ROG Strix SCAR 18 in Canada, featuring desktop-replacement specs and a steep price tag, signalling a new high-end era for gaming laptops.
ASUS has brought the 2026 ROG Strix SCAR 18 to Canada, positioning it as a top-end gaming laptop with specifications that are closer to a desktop replacement than a portable machine. The company says the model is built around an Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus processor and can be configured with either an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 Laptop GPU or an RTX 5090 Laptop GPU. ASUS also claims the system can sustain a total package power of 320W, which underlines how aggressively the machine is tuned for performance.
The display is one of the main selling points. According to ASUS, the SCAR 18 uses an 18-inch ROG Nebula HDR mini-LED panel with 4K resolution and a 240Hz refresh rate, supported by more than 2,000 dimming zones and peak HDR brightness of up to 1,600 nits. The company also says the laptop supports up to 128GB of DDR5 memory and up to 8TB of PCIe 5.0 NVMe storage, although the Canadian launch initially includes lower-capacity configurations.
Connectivity is broad for a gaming system of this size. ASUS lists two Thunderbolt 5 USB-C ports, three USB-A ports, a 2.5G Ethernet port, HDMI 2.1 and a combined audio jack. The chassis is finished in black, weighs 3.7kg and measures up to 3.5cm thick, according to the company’s regional specification page. ASUS also highlights Wi-Fi 7, a 90Wh battery and per-key RGB lighting on the keyboard.
For Canadian buyers, the biggest shock is the price. MobileSyrup reports that the RTX 5080 version is on sale now through ASUS’s store for C$6,899, while the RTX 5090 model is due at the end of August or early September at C$8,499. The company’s own Canadian product page confirms the laptop is available in the market, but says regional specifications may vary, which suggests the exact configuration mix will depend on local stock. The launch reinforces how far premium gaming laptops have drifted into ultra-high-end pricing, even before optional upgrades are considered.
